How environmental conditions influence the longevity of conduit systems

In many industrial applications, cables are often exposed to demanding environmental and operational conditions, where failure will be costly and disruptive.

Selecting the right cable protection system is crucial for maintaining performance, reducing maintenance costs and preventing downtime. A suitable cable protection system should be sustainable, durable, cost-effective and effectively protect against specific environmental conditions such as dirt intrusion, moisture ingress, extreme temperatures, chemical and electromagnetic influences, UV radiation, vandalism or rodent attacks.

Key environmental factors and recommended solutions

Mechanical stress and heavy impact

Mechanical protection is critical in environments with significant physical stress or mechanical impacts, such as factories, infrastructure, transportation sectors and industrial equipment. An all-metal cable protection system, consisting of flexible conduits and robust fittings, is typically the most effective solution. These systems protect cables from damage due to abrasion, pulling, pushing, torsion, stone splash and general wear and tear.

Recommended solution

Anaconda Sealtite: Liquid-tight flexible metal conduit. Galvanized steel or stainless steel inner core with high performance plastic jacket. Offers superior protection against mechanical, chemical and thermal stresses.

Thermal protection

Among the many environmental factors that affect the lifespan of conduit systems, temperature extremes are some of the most critical. Exposure to freezing cold can cause cables to become brittle and crack, while high heat can lead to melting, accelerated degradation, or even fire hazards – especially when failing to use halogen-free covers. To ensure durability and system safety, it’s essential to choose a cable protection solution specifically engineered for thermal resilience.

Which heat protection solutions are available?

Our heat protection range is designed to guard not only cables and wires against a variety of high-heat hazards, but also other applications such as; hydraulic, air and coolant hoses.

Depending on your application and industry, these solutions can withstand:

  • High continuous temperatures
  • Open flames and molten splashes
  • Sparks and radiant heat
  • Aggressive chemicals

We classify our heat protection products into four groups, based on temperature resistance and material composition:

Hipro products

Made with an E-glass yarn sleeve base, coated with iron-oxide silicone rubber. These sleeves can withstand:

  • Continuous temps: -55 °C to +260 °C
  • Short-term exposure: +800 °C (20 min), +1640 °C (15 – 30 sec)
  • Flammability rating according to UL-94 V1

Available in sleeves, tapes, blankets and wraps.

Thermo products

Available in sleeves, tapes, blankets. Constructed entirely from E-glass yarn, offering:

  • Continuous temp resistance: -55 °C to +538 °C

Silica products

Available in sleeves, tapes, blankets. Composed of amorphous silica yarn, designed for extreme heat:

  • Continuous temps up to +1090 °C

Basalt products

Available in sleeves. Made from basalt yarn, providing exceptional thermal protection and resistance to abrasion:

  • Continuous temperature resistance: -260 °C to +750 °C
  • Short-term exposure: up to +980 °C
  • Offers superior mechanical strength and durability compared to traditional glass fibre

Chemical exposure and corrosion

Thoughtful installation practices that minimize mechanical stress and regular maintenance routines focused on early detection of material fatigue or degradation are essential in prolonging the service life of these systems.

Combining advanced material selection, innovative protective technologies and proactive maintenance not only safeguards the cable infrastructure but also reduces long-term operational costs and downtime in chemically aggressive environments.

For applications operating in these agressive environments, we recommend verifcation using our chemical resistance table for plastic jackets or to contact one of our Area Sales Managers.

Ingress Protection (IP rating)

Ingress Protection (IP) ratings, as defined by IEC 60529, indicate how well an enclosure or device is protected against the ingress of solid particles and fluids. This rating is particularly important for our products because it provides assurance that they can operate reliably even in harsh environments where exposure to dust and fluids is a concern.

In environments where mechanical protection is key, but ingress protection is of less importance (max IP 40), we offer a wide range of high performance conduit systems within our Anaconda Multiflex range.

In scenarios where both mechanical durability and dependable sealing against solid particles and fluids are required, our Anaconda Multitite series is the go-to choice. Offered in IP 54, IP 65 and IP 68 variants, Multitite conduits pair a rugged outer jacket with precision-molded seals to keep solids and fluids out, all while preserving the flexibility and ease of routing that installers expect in demanding industrial settings.

When maximum protection against dust and fluids is non-negotiable, turn to our Anaconda Sealtite range. With IP 66/67 certification, Sealtite systems deliver superior sealing performance to block dust and fluids, encased in a crush-resistant design that shields your cables from impact and abrasion in the harshest environments.

UV radiation exposure

When cables, conduits and conduit fittings are installed in outdoor or other sunlight-exposed locations, they become vulnerable to the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation can cause materials especially plastics and rubbers to degrade, deteriorate resulting in cracking, brittleness, discoloration, reducing ingress protection integrity and ultimately failure.
Conduits with a black coloured jacket are highly recommended, due to the level of carbon which makes them UV resistant by nature to a certain level. Other colours are also possible due to their chemical structure which includes a UV stabilizer.
