Aero-X

“More than revenue, it’s important to understand the needs of the customer and find the right solution to fulfil those needs.” Paul van Trigt.

When the going gets tough…

Aero-X is more than just a distributor of fire suppression systems – the Swiss-based company engineers tailor made solutions for various types of applications and markets according to their needs. When it comes to the rolling stock sector, fire suppression systems need to be in place for the equipment on the trains and the safety of the passengers on board. There are strict safety standards which need to be met.

Fire suppression systems and it´s equipment needs to be compliant with those regulations, down to the last screw. Fire suppression systems and equipment can be exposed to dust, humidity, extreme temperatures below zero and mechanical influences, where especially vulnerable cables need to be protected and high IP requirements at enclosure side are crucial. Depending on where the systems is used, the whole equipment needs to be compliant with the national fire safety standards such as EN45545-2 in rolling stock in Europe or UL/CSA listed on equipment such as tunnel boring machines according to the national electric code (NEC). There are regulatory and mechanical factors that needed to be considered and Aero-X were looking for a single solution that could meet all those different requirements. So, they called in Anamet to help them with one aspect: cable glands.

Anamet’s cable glands are fully compliant with EN 45545-2 -3, the mandatory
fire safety standard applicable in Europe.

The sealing of Anamet’s cable glands fulfil IP68 and comply with
EN 45545, even at hazard level 3, R22, R23 both interior and
exterior equipment. These cable glands also stand the shock and vibration tests
that are customary in the sector. Furthermore they are UL/CSA approved.

One fits all

The components Aero-X uses in its fire suppression systems are used in a range of markets and have to meet various standards for these different sectors. The company was looking for one type of cable gland that it could use in the equipment across as many sectors they serve, including rolling stock, tunnel construction, oil & gas industry.

Anamet`s dual certified cable glands meet both requirements (EN45545 & UL/CSA) and are truly a one-type-fits-all solution, so customers have fewer items to stock, and there’s less risk of mistakes with employees accidentally installing the wrong cable gland.

As a US company, based in Mattoon, Illinois, Anamet has extensive knowledge
of US regulations and can deliver a wide range of products for this market.

Solution-driven

One of Anamet’s strong points is its ability to develop solutions for specific problems.

Big bore
For another of its products, Aero-X was looking for a cable gland that had two holes in the rubber seal, clamping two cables of 7mm by using a small M20 thread size complying with EN 45545. Anamet designed a solution in what is termed ‘big bore’ with two 7mm holes for M20 thread offering same IP rating and clamping force known from the standard version.

A further advantage of Anamet’s flexibility is that Aero-X was able to order these big bores in smaller quantities.

Anamet offers tailor-made solutions starting from 500 pieces.

Linear heat detection cables
Aero-X was looking to solve a problem with its systems used in tunnel construction projects. The linear heat detection cables used on fire suppression systems, especially installed on tunnel boring machines and rolling stock are mechanically sensitive which can be a challenge when used in rough environments where rocks may strike the underfloor appliances the of the machines and the cables. The cable needs to be mechanically protected by a conduit which must be permeable, non-isolating, as the cable has to detect a certain degree of temperature to activate the suppression system.

The combination of conduit and fitting needed to be water-tight and dust-tight (IP68), which is a challenge not using a liquid tight conduit (too much isolating) as in this case. The bare metal conduit just offers IP40 ingress protection but in combination with the Anaconda cable-hose fitting, the assembly is upgraded to IP68 at enclosure side, using the same sealing system Aero – X knows from the cable glands, on top with same approvals, mounted on a conduit with special connection set.

Explosion-proof equipment
Aero-X supplies fire suppression systems used in hazardous locations which are subject to IECEx regulations. Complying with these standards means different test methods, but Anamet`s IECEx product range offers solutions for both, conduit & fittings or only cable glands used in hazardous locations.

Anamet is able to supply cable glands and fittings applicable in IECEx (d) environment zone 1&2 for gas and 21&22 for dust. Depending on cable type and length, a different type of execution is mandatory, available in many different thread sizes and types.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going
The tough environments where Aero-X’s systems operate place heavy demands on each component of that equipment. For the safety of the equipment and the responsibility for human life, good is not good enough. The challenge this poses means a supplier needs to go the extra mile to find the right solution to a particular problem. Anamet makes it a point to fully understand its client’s needs and ensures that when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
