IP-Rating

IP, which stands for an Ingress Protection is often found in the form of a table. An IP-rating is a classification of an enclosure or cases ability to resist items entering it. An IP-rating is classified by categorical codes. These, in turn, summarise the scale of protection offered from foreign bodies such as; substantial objects, dirt and moisture

The numbers that follow IP each have a specific meaning. The first, with 1 being the lowest and 6 the highest, indicates the degree of protection of enclosed equipment from foreign bodies. The second defines, with 1 being the lowest and 9 the highest, the protection level that the enclosure enjoys from various forms of moisture (drips, sprays, submersion etc).
